Idk about other people my back is usually pretty sore after every workout but is good by the next so....although deads do really drain you because of the nature of the movement (no stretch reflex)

My guess for the reason is that the spinal vertebrae just aren't designed to articulate very much, so it's not easy to put the lumbar muscles through a large range of motion, and so they don't get as much blood flow through them.
It may feel that way just because your back handles a lot of weight on every lift. Try some foam rolling or get a massage on your off days and you should be fine.
I assume you mean the erectors.
This is what I was told and it seems legit enough for me to never have question it:
The erectors are covered in layers of fascia called the thoracolumbar fascia which consists of three layers ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thoracolumbar_fascia )
The fascia is not as vascular as muscle tissue and because of this, it prevents the muscles from swelling due to inflammation. Swelling and inflammation are important aspects of muscle recovery and since they are impeded by the fascia, it takes relatively longer to recover than it does other muscles surrounded by thinner/less fascia.
may or may not be BS but it's good enough for me.
