I think they're a fun and challenging exercise. I've done them after front squats as a way to get more leg work. They're similiar to front squats in the way that they allow you to work the legs without loading the spine. Not loading the spine does come at the cost of putting more stress on the knees on this exercise, so it's still a kind of double edged sword. I can't even do them anymore, due to having a torn meniscus on my both knees. But it's probably okay, if it doesn't hurt you.

    Paul Anderson recommended them.

I've always thought these things go hand in hand with crossfit?

No, it was because I was doing regular back squats with too much weight, and too shitty form. Of course, the pistol squats probably didn't help the situation.

Pistol squats are fun but I am too susceptible to patellar tendinitis/tendonosis to mess with them anymore.

Paul Anderson recommended 1 legged squats, off a bench or platform, as most people were not able to hold the non-squatting leg out in front of them. I typed it from memory, without checking his booklet.

I tried to do them and couldn't do a single one even though I can do 160kg squats. On youtube discovered you have to work your way up to a full pistol squat via incremental exercises, but I lost interest after a couple of weeks. They are suppose to be good for detecting and improving weaknesses/imbalance.
