Are you sick?
I've been having some trouble breathing lately. Like, I'll just be sitting down and I'll have to expend actual effort to breathe. It happens even more often after I eat a lot.
I'm only 17 and weigh ~195, and I'm about 5'9", so it's not like I'm overweight. I squat in the mid 400 frequently, but I haven't ran anywhere in about 4 years. Is having a weak cardiovascular system a thing? Should I do some prowler work?
Are you sick?
Its not that unusual for a young person to have a congenital heart defect that has been previously unnoticed. There has been many cases in the UK at least of talented soccer players right from school age to professional suddenly having heart attacks and dying. If your heart in not working too well then you will of course be short of breath.
But the fact it is affecting you when sitting down after eating and not so much when training suggests it probably isn't anything so serious.
I am 99% sure it has to do with your weight. Are you trying to catch your breath, but can't?
I'm 19, 5'6", and at the tail end of a bulk to 200 (192 this morning). Started experiencing breathing troubles around 185, usually after eating, like you said. I'm thinking its the combination of increased abdominal fat, being in a general overfed state, and having a full stomach. All working to restrict your diafragm.
This is based solely on my own conjecture, I'm looking forward to others' thoughts.
While you are figuring this out relax and research some deep breathing techniques like "ocean breathing". How's the stress?
If you look up ocean breathing you will find a whole lot of silly BS along with it but the idea is to breath out against some resistance (like fogging a mirror and making the "ocean" sound) and increasing air pressure in your lungs, resulting in better oxygenation (and hopefully some relaxation).
A few minutes of that a couple times a day might help.
Maybe you should just get it checked. Tomorrow.
It's very possible you could have pneumonia, or bronchitis without the classical symptoms such as high temperature. It's pretty common. It could be a heart thing like dastardly said. Other possibilities are immotile ciliary syndrome or Kartagener syndrom which is similar -many people go through life short of breath and have trouble breathing without even knowing that they suffer from such disorders because their doctors never even heard of such diseases and are mainly mistaken for allergies. Another possibility is that you have developed an allergic reaction to something (some food) that obstructs your airways.
1. Are you a smoker?
2. Do you get short of breath when eating a specific food?
Talk to your doctor and get a checkup.
