    Default Calluses form from squatting?

    Hi Mr Rippetoe,

I have been squatting for a month.

Is this(circled in red in picture below) common for beginners?
Is it similar to calluses forming on palms result from doing pull-ups/chin-ups?
Or is it due to incorrect positioning of bar?
Or insufficient tightening of shoulder muscles to hold the bar in place?

By the way, I do wear a t-shirt when squatting.

The bar will have an effect on your back, of course. Is there a problem with this?

Thank you for your reply Sir!

No problem for me since so far no pain or other discomforts. Just felt a slight concern I might be doing something wrong since I haven't read anyone else complaining about this.

That is because you are the first to do so.

You're probably too new here to have seen this thread. I remember it because of the squat tan line on page three:

After the first several weeks, I noticed a line across my back and thought, "what the heck is that?" I later realized it's exactly where I place the bar for squats. The good news is, I got positive feedback on the placement. It does itch a little from time to time.

I have the same thing, like everyone else probably, and didn't notice until a couple of months ago when I started making plans for a large back tattoo. At least now I know where not to put any ink.

    LOL

    Welcome aboard.

Can't say my experience is the same as everyone's, but for what it's worth, I had a line across my back for the first 3-4 months I did SS, and after a while it went away (surprisingly, perhaps, as obviously the weights keep getting heavier - I guess the human body is just that amazing when it comes to adaptation....).

I'll check back in with you once I squat 400 to see if it returns :-P
