    Default Deadlift 335 fail

    Hi Andy,

I did 335 deadlifts today and my grip failed me after two reps. I have straps but didn't use them because I thought I could do it (I'm reluctant to use mixed grip due to some shoulder issues). However my back didn't feel that solid for the first time and hurts a tiny tiny bit in the right glute area, close to the spine. Do you see any form breakdown here? Do I need to deload? 2 things I noticed is on the 2nd rep I think my hips rise faster than my chest, and I think I go into flexion on the descent. Thanks

Hard to tell from this angle. Looked to me like knees were too far forward on 2nd rep. My guess is you had most of your weight on the balls of your feet, with bar too far out in front of you. That's how you get hurt. Take some profile/oblique footage and send it upstairs to coaches QandA. You need to learn to pull with an alternate grip or a hook grip if you wanna lift.

I, too, have shoulder issues, (calcification on the joint, slap tear, etc) pull anything over 365 with a mixed grip no issues - ever. Chalk and mixed grip are your friends when it comes to heavy deads.

You still at your friend's gym that has a big diameter bar to work with?

Nope. I guess the bar wasn't the issue the previous week.
