Might need to widen the grip. I had that problem until I widened my clean grip to the same width as my bench grip.
That trick with the straps really does make this a good stretch. I actually have tried using this to teach cleans, but not as a stretch, as an actual movement done for reps. I found just repeatedly front racking off the hooks gets you more comfortable moving to catch the bar. Slips neatly right into the "from the top down" teaching process as the very first thing.
