Default Anthropology question - Squat Form

    Hey people,

I got a question and I can't figure it out alone. Maybe I am also just overthinking it.

I can't find the perfect squat form/stance for myself which I can get comfortable with. So maybe you guys can give me some hints or suggestions out of your own experience. I would really appreciate that.

    About me:

I am about 5'8 and 196 lbs with a body fat percentage of about 15%.
I have really short legs and a long upper body.
BUT: My upper thighs, butt and hips are HUGE, like seriously big! Not really fat, just meat and muscles lol.
I am also super flexible (when I stand up straight with my heels together, I can point my toes 90 degree outside like a ballerina xD).

    About my problem:

Like I said I can't find a stance that fits me well. I switched to medium-wide sumo deadlifts, that was one of the best decisions I made! In the normal deadlift my hip flexors always got pinched in the bottom postion (my knees want out!). The same problem I have with the squat. Either the get pinched or the get inflamed -.-...

I really appreciate your input on that one!

    Cheers,

    Dan

Post a video. Usual recommendation is to start with your heels at shoulder width, then go narrower or wider depending on how it feels.

One thing to try is put the empty bar on your back, squat to the bottom, pause, and wiggle your feet around a little until it feels right. Stand up, take a look and do a couple squats. Repeat this until you find what works. This is basically the same thing you did when you first learned, but instead of pushing your knees out with your elbows, you're holding the bar.

NOTE: If you are right at the beginning of your LP and 45lbs is a significant weight, do this with something lighter than a barbell.

    Wide Stance

    Medium Wide

The funny thing is, if I am honest, if I look at those I think more its all in my head xD They actually don't look bad at all. Its more 'the feeling' while doing them^^

Your narrow stance (first video) isn't so narrow, dude. I can't tell the difference in the other side videos. I'd say to stick with whatever feels best and you'll instinctively adjust it over time.

Your narrow looks ok to me except you're moving slow and not getting proper depth. The wide has a lot of valgus knee going on. Once you find a stance you feel good with upload a heavy set of 5.

If I remember, I'll watch the videos when I get home.

Unrelated to that, the term is "anthropometry." "Anthropology" is the study of humans.

I agree with this. Your perception of a narrow stance looks pretty normal to my eye. Maybe you're comparing to suited powerlifters. Also, cool undercut haircut.
