    Default Starting Stall? (Press)

    Can I get some advice?

I'm on the SS original novice program. I've got up to:
    Squat 3x5 82.5kg
    Bench 3x5 57.5kg
    Dead 1x5 80kg
    Power 5x3 35kg
    Press 37.5kg FAIL

Basically, everything is going fine, linear progression keep increasing weight etc

My Press was fine at 30kg and 32.5kg.

The first session I tried to go to 35kg I failed on the last rep, so i decided to go for 35kg again the next time it was press day, made this ok.

37.5kg was really tough but I made all the reps.

40kg was the problem, to be fair I was rushing to get out of the gym to go and see Wales v England in the rugby... but anyway, I managed only 1x4 at 40kg, 1x4 at 35kg, 1x3 at 35kg.

So now, whats the best way to keep gaining in the press? should I microload the bar or try to increase the weight every two sessions?

(or get more sleep and calories)?

Im guessing by your numbers here that your body weight is very light. Eat more sleep more is the standard answer and it applies to you too.

If it's stalling that low, you're either too light or doing it wrong.

I don't really doubt that you're doing it wrong... post a video.

Given the relation to the bench, your press seems about right. The problem is just that you're as weak as a kitten. Try eating more and loading with smaller increments, as it seems that, even at this light weight, going up 2.5kg each time is too much for you.

Why are you deadlifting 3x5? SS is 1x5.

    Hi BodyBeing,

I had your same problem when I started. My advice would be, in order of importance/feasibility:

    - smaller increments (even 0.5Kg at a time)
    - eat more.
    - longer rest between sets
    - eat even more
    - try five sets of three
    - did I mention you should eat more ?
    - switch to a Texas Method programming.

Incidentally, the original SS program calls for only one set of five for the deadlift, not three.

    Good luck.

yeah, typo. I am only doing 1x5 deadlifts.

    My weight is 95kg, I'm 6'4" tall.
I dont eat enough, I dont sleep enough, I have a ton of stress from working with crazy people and studying at the same time, my shoes are crap, my technique is probably bad...

But hey, I'm not far off a BW 1RM squat and dead. For someone like me this is a huge big deal and I'm happy about it. I'm not as strong as most people here but I'm still the only person in my gym who is squatting 3 days a week.

You won't have time for eating, sleep, etc. unless you make it. That almost always means busting your ass in other areas of life.
