I'm 40. Diagnosed with degenerative disc disease when I was 25. Herniations at T7-8 & at T8-9. It was this problem that led me to put away the barbell and power rack at the time.

I want to get back into strength training and get back into shape, and more particularly SS, how do I account for this?

Since I am not a doctor and I don't know the specifics of your case, take what I say with a grain of salt. However, there is almost certainly a weight that you can squat, press, and deadlift with good form. Do that. Slowly make it heavier. Be a little bit conservative with your loading. Find a Starting Strength Coach to help you out.
