Default Extremely Short Legged Fat Guy

Just starting lifting. Obese 49 year old guy. 378.4 lbs. Working on Novice program for Fat people based on some stuff combining machine and dumbells for 6 weeks while I learn how to use barbell. While stomach shrinks some.

But my question is I have very odd body shape. I am 6 ft 1 in+ with 37 in sleeve length but I only have 28 inch inseam. Leg length is what most 5 ft 8 in guys have. Basically my knuckles drag on the ground. Wondering how that will affect my barbell lifts.

I'm basically the same as this. For me, short femurs + long back = good squat but relatively shitty deadlift.

You might find the same, but you'll never know until you start training so probably best to get started and see where you end up.

Thanks DeriHughes. I just got started and my quads are telling me they hate me. Because of the weight problem I am using a program for 6 weeks I took from Dan John and changed to make it a beginner's program. It's about the same as what is in PPST.

What really got me started was Rip's book "Mean Ol' Mr. Gravity". In the answer to Expectations For Overweight Individuals Rip said "You figured you'd wait until conditions were perfect to do this thing. This pattern of behavior didn't just start recently, did it?" That totally describes me perfectly. One big problem that I have is I am Bipolar so I am great at learning how to do things but not so good at getting myself to actually do them. So after reading Rip's answer I got off my ass and picked a program that would get me to the gym and get started. And I got off my ass and did. Yeah me. So I will work that for 6 weeks while getting ready for SS.

surely if his "knuckles drag on the ground" he should have pretty good deadlift leverage. if you can lock out your knees but the bar doesn't leave the floor, is that a white light?

Used to lift with a guy who was about 5'10" 380 with very short femurs. Very strong guy, but his squats have depth issues sometimes, and it's very difficult to judge depth in the first place. Squat depth may be something to watch out for.

oflmao....Still I have never found anyone with as short legs as I have. My arms and body are matched, I think. When I have asked other guys I found that most guys with 28" inseam are around 5'8". My shoe size is 12.5 to 13 and I have large hands.

Good on you getting started mate. Once you get onto SS you should be able to make rapid progress.

Re what hamburger said, I do struggle with depth a bit - make sure you bury your squats every time. And enjoy the leverage advantage of short legs.

Large hands and long arms - your deadlift should be pretty solid.

Of course, none of this remotely as important as making sure you keep turning up. Start a log on here and we'll keep you honest.

My neighbor is 6'2" and has about a 28" inseam. He wears 30" pants and they look too long on him. Everyone jokes with him about it. He's an awesome squatter and has a pretty good deadlift as well. I'm 5' 7" and I have a 29" inseam. My squat kinda sucks.

Seems like guys with short legs and long torsos have a really good squat. It'll be tough to tell until you get into a bit better shape but I'd put money on your squat progressing faster than your DL. I'm the exact opposite, 6'1" 35" inseam. My DL is probably a good 75lbs stronger than my squat. I have obnoxiously long femurs, I often compare watching my squat form videos to watching someone fold up two tent poles.
