I guess they paid the boy. That will not turn out well for him.
Rip, as bad as weightlifting in the USA is, I doubt its sunk this low.
http://www.smh.com.au/sport/olympics...#ixzz1xdYwZHxCAN AUSTRALIAN weightlifter has been accused of holding his own federation to ransom by demanding $5000 or threatening to not compete and thereby end the Olympic hopes of his entire team.
In an extraordinary series of backroom developments during last week's Oceania Weightlifting Championships in Samoa, which doubled as an Olympic trial, sources told the Herald that Daniel Koum asked for a cash sum of $5000 just 40 minutes before going on stage for his opening lift.
If he didn't receive the money, Koum is alleged to have threatened to not compete, which would have prevented any Australian male weightlifter competing at the 2012 games.
I guess they paid the boy. That will not turn out well for him.
Australia is not a very forgiving place for sportsmen who are seen to violate the spirit of the game or let their mates down. Would expect that he'll be blacklisted from all future national teams.
cash for snatch?
am i the only one who thought this thread was going somewhere else?
I also read that that was the most an Aussie has ever paid for a snatch sight unseen.
Should have asked for $50,000. Fool.
The particularly disgusting thing about this is that it sounds like the money was put up by the coaches and officials from their own pockets, all of whom are volunteers who receive minimal compensation.
The New Zealanders put us to shame. While we have a lifter who threatens the spot of another lifter unless he gets his $$, they have one who lifts with a badly torn quad in incredible pain in order to secure a spot for his team mate.
