I trained 7 days post-op. I never do unilateral anything for any reason. Abdominal tension/valsalva protects the back, so you'd better do it. Wear a belt.
Did you let them do a unilateral inguinal hernia repair?
Hi Mark, I just have done the first two SS sessions after direct inguinal hernia repair (mid-september) and have a couple questions. Do I need unilateral work for the lower back and abdomen on the side that the repair was done - lower back seems to be much more sore on that side? Is it ok to practice abdominal tension and/or valsalva maneuver?

Yes it was only repaired on one side. Is that something that might be a problem later on?
Obviously. If one side was weak enough to herniate, what would keep the other side from following? This is why the bilateral repair has become the standard -- you're in there anyway, so just mesh both sides and get it all over with.
