What are powerlifters doing when they approach the bar for a squat, and kind of stand up in front of it, and appear to try to bend it around their shoulders, just before getting under it and lifting it?

    Shoulder stretch?

It can be seen in videos of Kirk Karwoski, Lee Moran, and others.

Just wondering if it's something I should try.

Not sure what you mean. Got a video?

Everyone has a different approach, something that helps them focus.

See Kirk Karwoski at the 44 second mark.

I see many other lifters do this.

In order to help settle into a heavy bar and get the shoulders placed properly. I started doing it (though not as exaggerated) after being advised to do so by a great local lifting coach. It can also help you make sure you're centered (feeling out the tension through your arms, shoulders and back). I find that I can nail the proper position better and maintain upper back tightness throughout the set, but your mileage may vary.

Yeah it is part getting your back tight, and, i think, part mirroring what lifters around you do.

I do this instinctively just because it feels better to me. I feel like I position the bar better and I can get my back tight as hell.

I started doing this and I have no idea what made me do it. I think it just happened organically. I feel like it has helped get the bar on the right spot better and helped my tightness as mentioned by laidbackzack.

Same here. It helps me find that spot right below the spine of the scapula.

    starting strength coach development program
    I started doing it too.
    Just copying the pros.

It stretches the shoulders and also I'm arching the crap out of my back, upper and lower, hopefully that helps me keep form in the squat.
