    I deadlift with a double overhand grip. I've tried to mix grip it, but I have scoliosis and it just throws off my back set up. I use chalk but my grip is starting to slip. I've tried a hook grip, but it slips still and it also hurts. I've tried straps but I still would like to keep my grip strong and the straps don't allow me to grip the bar properly. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with gymnastic grips that these Cultfit fellows are using.

    I think those are mostly to prevent callus and skin tears on the hands.

    I have a scoliosis too, and I mixed grip when need be, even though I dislike it. But if you don't plan on competing, you can get away without doing it. The hook grip hurts, but unless you have carnie hands, you should be able to hold onto the bar up to pretty close to your max. Use it. Learn to use straps properly, because they work and do allow you to hold on to the bar if you know how to use them. It sounds like you're looking for an easy way out. These are deadlifts. There is no easy way out.

    Definitely recommend working on the hook grip. My psoas and lower back experienced all kinds of fuckery from mixed-gripping anything over 3 plates, and it completely derailed my progress. In 4 or 5 weeks I should be able to set an all-time PR with a hook grip without issue, thanks to the symmetry.

    I have borderline carnie hands, so it's hard for me to get a hook grip in the first place, and the bar slips badly unless I liberally apply the liquid chalk. I had to start relatively low on the weight, and it hurt like a motherfucker for the first session or two (small thumbs probably make the problem worse...). Believe me, I understand the struggle. But getting the hook grip to finally work has profoundly improved my deadlift mechanics.

    It's still slipping with a hook grip? How much are you lifting? It will hurt anyway, yeah, but it generally shouldn't be slipping if you're doing it right and not deadlifting 700.

    I'm really not trying to be a pussy. And I believe my hands are on the small side. I feel like Uncle Jack from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It feels like I can't get a strong grip around the straps when wrapped around the bar. I don't know for sure, but wouldn't that cause the body to not be as "tight" before the lift?
