    Hey coach!

I'm in my 3rd week of the program and enjoying lifting more than I thought I would. I'm up to 210lb x5 on my deadlift at 187lb bodyweight. I have trouble keeping the bar in contact with my legs on the way up. When the weight breaks free from the ground it almost seems to swing away from me and then only contact my thighs right before I lock out.

Your help is very much appreciated. I want to make sure I get things right so I have a long successful and safe lifting career.

    Thanks,

    Matt

You're starting too close to the bar.

When you start so close to the bar, what results is essentially a straight-leg DL, which is what you are doing. Moving away from the bar a bit allows you to use quadriceps, because you'll have to bend your knees to reach the bar - if you use the correct set-up.
