    Rip,

I am trying to teach my 13 yo son to squat, but I need help.

With just a light bar, he has body parts going all over the place. He has poor flexibility, no depth, and his knees turn in, which causes pain. Even his body weight squats are ugly.

I think that overall he just suffers from a general lack of strength, but I don't know how to improve his form while he tries to build some strength.

What are some fundamental things I can do to help him along?

    Thanks

Get him a better coach than his dad, sadly, is.

No. But this is not where you post to receive free-gratis self-esteem enhancement and pats on the head. It is the obvious truth, and this is sometimes hurtful to us.

Sometimes it's just like that with kids about that age. I tried to give mine piano lessons and they wouldn't have it. Now that they are older they want my advice on lots of things... including piano playing and lifting.
Time to start charging them money.

Alternatively, give your son the book to read, and have him use the cues to coach your form. When he can do that, he'll understand what you mean when you use the same cues with him.

If you're going to coach kids that age, you'd better have your head out of your ass. They are the hardest demographic to coach, for several reasons.

Just waiting a year or two might be helpful.

    >_> At the risk of you giving me a tongue lashing...may I ask for some of the reasons that make kids at that age hard to coach?

How many can you think of? Let's make you type, instead of me, since I already have.
