So, inspired by my epic thread "don't get sore from squats" I've gone back to re-reading my SS and PP books. This time with the care and attention I should have had originally.

Question: There is a great amount of technical content and references to anatomy, kinesology, efficiency of movement/moments and the like. I have no grounding in any of these subjects but I would like to develop one. The level of technical depth in this sport has really taken me by surprise and I don't wish to remain ignorant.

Nutrition seems to be another area that is calling my ignorance out as well.

Where do I start? Anatomy? Physiology? Any recommend some good texts?

    Thanks

I personally think the A+P in SS should be good enough. You don't really need to know exactly what's going on as long as you're performing the lifts correctly.

I think nutrition is somewhat vital, but where to start is impossible. There are so many competing theories its unbelievable. I believe Martin Berkhan has a list of the top 10 books you should have if you're interested in diet/strength training on www.leangains.com .

Rip once recommended everyone read Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. I second the notion. Good place to start in regards to nutrition.

An incredibly bad place to start.

With regards to anatomy, I recently got Kilgore's Anatomy Without a Scalpel. Haven't read it yet but the little time I've spent skimming it seemed like very, very useful. People have been saying good things about it. I don't know of any good sports nutrition books on the subject but as far as online articles go, Lyle McDonald's articles are pretty good.

No surprise to see Carlos here hating on a book he's never read.

There's only two things you need to know about diet: First, to get big and strong, eat a lot. Secondly, if that 'a lot' entails a large percentage of shitty/sugary carbs, you will get fat. The first of these facts is clear to anyone with more than half a brain. Taubes will demonstrate the latter.

And as far as I know, Lyle is still in the "you can only put on 2lbs of muscle / month" crowd.

Did you even consider that Dr. Carlos might know something you don't?

I've also learned a lot about the physiology of strength gain & fat loss through Lyle McDonald's resources. I can't deny that he knows his shit, even if he doesn't "walk the walk", so to speak.

I have learnt a lot just by following Mobility WOD, doing the homework, and Wikipediaing words I didn't know.

Do you mean that you think he's reasonable because he's in that crowd, or unreasonable?
