So I am still plugging away on TM Basic for the next 6-7 weeks or so before switching to the hybrid program outlined in the book. I've started going to an oly class every other weekend to work on technique and I have quickly learned that I am not comfortable at all dropping down into a full clean or full snatch.

I've only front squatted like one time in my life. Does it make sense to do front squats on the TM light day rather than back squats if I am trying to transition more to weightlifting for competition? Or is there a specific reason that makes the back squat better for the light day's active recovery?

For general strengthening, there is no need to do front squats. In your case, you could probably substitute them in for the light day. Be conservative in how you load them since you have not done them before.
