Default Press 2.0 - fighting over extension

    Hi Coaches,

The press has always been a tough one for me, mechanically.

Here's what the video revealed to my eye: I don't shove my hips forward enough when I start the lift, so I overcompensate by diving too far under the bar at the top. I try so hard to brace the abs to avoid over extension, but fail to use my hips correctly. Sound about right?

Any cues to fix it are appreciated.

You may be getting a touch of overextension at the top as you lockout, but unless this is hurting you, I would not get too upset about it. When people talk about overextension in the press, it usually happens right at the start when people lay back too much. You aren't doing that. I agree, however, you could push your hips further forward at the beginning of the press. If it is any consolation, your press is okay. Just reach a little more with the hips and you should be good.

Thanks, Tom. Will do. Maybe if I reach more in the beginning, the over extension at the top will be less pronounced.

It's not clear but your grip may be too wide.

Thank you. I'll take a front view on Monday.

Front oblique is the most useful.

Got it. Here's a compilation video of yesterday's work sets. Same weight. I got a front oblique, a front square and a side oblique angle.

Long forearms are causing the bar to float in the bottom position, unless I choose to let my elbows drop.

    I appreciate the critique.

Bar floating above the shoulders is perfectly fine. Bring your elbows in a little so that your forearms are more parallel with respect to the humerus. Allow the bar to dip slightly right before the press. Otherwise, not bad. Srunching up your face so much is probably a distraction, too. Save grimacing until the bar slows down slightly above your head.

Got it. I can see how my elbows are off a little. Believe it or not, that's really how hard I'm trying to clench my abs - but I'll make an effort to stop scrunching.

    Thank you.
