    Default Creatine - common side effects

    • starting strength seminar december 2024
    • starting strength seminar february 2025
    • starting strength seminar april 2025
    Hi - just started taking creatine again and I've noticed 2 side effects. It seems to have a noticeable stimulant effect - heart speeds up, feel energized/a bit anxious. Also, I frequently have a bowel movement in the half hour after taking.

    Does this make any sense to you? Have you heard of this happening? FWIW I'm taking a pretty good brand. Not sure if I should mention it here or not..

    As far as the stimulant effect- no that's not common though that reaction has so many potential causes that it'd be hard to tease out. If you're drinking caffeine or a pre workout alongside the creatine, that'd explain this and the bowel movement, but creatine doesn't really do either of those.

    For me, weight gain is the most noticeable side effect of Creatine. Some people say it can even affect your kidneys.

    I have noticed when I take Creatine that I do tend to have to pee a little quickly afterwards.

    I can't say I've noticed anything in particular when using creatine. Positive or negative. I don't have a good way to measure its effect either.

    When it comes to supplements, I try to find good sources for interpreting studies and the like that's out of my bailiwick. This is where Jordan and people like him come in. Then, weigh the potential benefits against the cost and any potential downsides. Then act accordingly. What else could you do besides trust random opinions on the web?

    Do you think its a better idea to consult a physician first before taking Creatine?

    Not at all- most are not familiar enough with the research on it to even have an opinion worth your co-pay.

    Only side effect I get is more reps with more weight.
