When your feet are attached to the floor, attempting the abduct the thighs will cause external rotation. I think thats the idea, but I am not keen on the cue either. I feel it may encourage some people to let their knees cave in.

I've found it to be a helpful cue for the deadlift, but not the squat.
What about just trying to feel tension in the adductors? Think of 'stretching' them maybe.
I think its an awful cue that comes from geared PL where guys squat with their feet 3' apart.
I much prefer "knees out" or thinking about externally rotating my femurs.
