It's also hard as hell to build. I've never had harder, more draining workouts than doing 7-8 total sets, with 3x5 at 5RM. The third set of squats, powercleans, and deadlifts are especially brutal.

30 minutes in, I'm drenched and can barely see straight. And I thought I had worked out "hard" for the past 15 years. This shit works, but it is hard.

    Probably.

Which leads to the "Doing it wrong" comment if he keeps losing strength.

Kevin, sorry for the thread hijack, but where do you work out in Grand Rapids? My training partner is headed out there for a week and looking for somewhere good and cheap to train.

The place I work out at blows. But Westside Fitness, on the, well, west side, is supposed to be good. They also have a free one-week trial membership:

Sounds like you aren't cut out for the world of lifting weights.

Don't worry however, you are in good company. My wife and her two friends thought the same thing and quit too...

That's where I was going. That's a lot of strength loss for not much weight loss.

    A few possibilities:

    - He really did lose strength, which seems unlikely.

    - He had a bad session, which maybe the case but not enough info provided.

    - He's lost endurance because of the cut, and his ability to do multiple sets with a weight is compromised. Again, need more info.

    - Not doing squats has him out of practice. Possible as well, but squats aren't so high skill that he should lose that much.

    - Mix and match. Could be a couple of things.

Carni, remember a few months ago when you weren't making any progress and you thought you had reached your genetic potential? It was shortly after that that you switched to 8x3 and made great progress. You just need to get into a groove again. You could also try eating four times a week instead of three.
