    Hey Rip.

I sometimes have problems when squatting when using a bare or even foamed bar. It will compress my spine a bit and causes pinched nerves. Its not a massive issue as I have managed to fined a really good chiro who fixes me up in a visit and I am on my merry way.

However I have started using this device I saw another guy in the gym using called a Manta Ray. He was using it as he had a pretty big motor bike accident and it was the only way he could squat.

I quite like it as I don't get any more soreness but am I doing myself a disservice using this?

    Is it a crutch I don't need?

    Thanks.

If you have to ask if you are being a pussy, you already know the answer.

The Manta Ray is actually a useful device to strengthen the lower back by creating a longer lever arm between the bar and your lower back.
Westside Barbell uses them for this purpose and I don't consider the lifters there pussies. It's just another tool to build strength.

Please explain how an unstable bar positioning strengthens the lower back better than optimal bar positioning below the spine of the scapula? Given that low-bar squatting allows heavier weight to be used, and the greater horizontal back angle in this style of squat requires more force from the erectors to keep you off your face.

    I'll wait.
