Finally got around to listening to this, great discussion. Interesting to see at least part of SS pivot to powerbuilding and using lighter weights for higher reps vs chasing pure strength and PR's.

I can see this approach appealing to a lot of younger lifters who the classic SS philosophy may not.

I hope the younger lifters heard clearly: "GET STRONG FIRST," and then make your deltoids and triceps prettier, if you so desire, while being sure to always include the big barbell lifts as the foundation of the program.

I see this as being in line with SS philosophy. The blue book is all you need to start. When you're done with the NLP, time for Practical Programming. If I remember correctly there's a line in there about "catching the bodybuilding bug" and how that would alter programming.

Glad you enjoyed the episode. Will is an encyclopedia.

We talked about this "powerbuilding" silliness today on the podcast we recorded, to air next Friday-week.

Absolutely! I appreciated the spirit of the discussion, as I myself have a host of issues that prevent me doing SS strictly by the book, but I still apply the principles of SS and Practical Programming to my training.

I had a similar epiphany as you did re: SS and bodybuilding... after abandoning my own fruitless "bodybuilding" training and then doing the NLP, I magically started growing muscle and getting much closer to my "bodybuilding" goals.

Looking forward to more podcasts with you guys!

Young people doing powerbuilding and getting results don't understand the results are 99% from the "power" part, which is the big lifts. And the online PTs who sell this stuff probably don't either. These people might get their deadlift up 100lbs but they think it's the isolation stuff that made their arms bigger or the accessories that made their deadlift go up, while the deadlift itself is a display of the strength gained AFTER putting on muscle with the other exercises.
Somehow they can't see the actual correlation between strength and size.

It's still better than bodybuilding only programs with high volume and low intensity, no press, no deadlifts and ass to grass squats. I think those are quickly disappearing, as even a very fast google search will results in better information than that. The only ones left doing that stuff are people who only join the gym 1 month out of the year anyway.
