Diversity backfire: all-female firefighter team accidentally started huge forest fire in Canada…

It's fun watching Clown World implode and all, but can we just get this over with as quickly as possible so we can start rebuilding? The sooner the better. Thanks.

Having a negative perception of masculinity is linked to worse mental health, study finds

“‘Toxic masculinity is toxic terminology,'” Barry told PsyPost. “We all need to stop using toxic terminology such as ‘toxic masculinity’, because it is possible these ideas are being internalized by men and boys and impacting them negatively. In some cases, men with serious mental health problems may ‘act out’ in antisocial behaviors, so it is likely that toxic terminology – in the media, schools, government and elsewhere – is actually increasing the likelihood of behaviors they are intended to reduce. Instead, it might help if we highlight more the ways that masculinity can be a positive influence on men and society.”

Across age groups, men generally agreed that their sense of masculinity was associated with feeling protective towards women. However, the study revealed interesting generational differences in how masculinity influences violent attitudes towards women. Older men, more than their younger counterparts, disagreed with the notion that masculinity “makes me inclined to be violent toward women.” On average, men over the age of 60 largely disagreed with this proposition, whereas men under the age of 40 were notably more inclined to agree with it.

“Men who felt protective towards women had better mental wellbeing, whereas those who felt violent to women had lower mental wellbeing,” Barry said. “I was surprised and saddened that younger men, below around age 35 or 40, think masculinity makes them feel violent towards women. I suspect this self-concept is due to the influence of negative concepts about masculinity perpetuated in our culture in recent decades.”
His heart is in the right place I guess, but my God what naivety. None of this is an accident. It's the whole point.

Camille Paglia has issued very prescient warnings about this, for over a decade. Her viewpoint (paraphrased) is that if we keep emasculating Western men, there will be no one to stand guard against the barbarians at the gate, and once the barbarians invade, their "toxic masculinity" won't consist of off-color jokes or a "male gaze", but rape and unapologetic violent subjugation.

"‘What you’re seeing is how a civilization commits suicide,» says Camille Paglia. This self-described «notorious Amazon feminist» isn’t telling anyone to Lean In or asking Why Women Still Can’t Have It All. No, her indictment may be as surprising as it is wide-ranging: The military is out of fashion, Americans undervalue manual labor, schools neuter male students, opinion makers deny the biological differences between men and women, and sexiness is dead. And that’s just 20 minutes of our three-hour conversation

We shouldn't have to choose between the grooming gangs in Birmingham, England or the grooming gangs in Florida for Epstein's island.
I don't want either of them.

We can't have politicians who place the interests of another nation above the interests of America.

You know who actually does "hate us for our freedoms"? The US federal government.

Just jumping in real quick to say I've been enjoying the audiobook of "Strong Enough?" I listen to it via the Audible app whenever I'm in my car. Rip is the narrator of course, so if anyone else enjoys listening to Rip, it is worth the price. Great job on the narration Rip, it sounds very "in the moment" to the point I wonder if you improvised a few lines here and there. Thanks for making my commute much more enjoyable.

Paglia seems like a difficult, disobedient, person.

She calls out Naomi Wolfe for "gender as a social construct" ! Is that current?

Derek Chauvin calls his trial a ‘sham’ in first interview from prison

Supreme Court declines appeal from Derek Chauvin in murder of George Floyd

The rule of law objectively no longer exists. Plan and act accordingly.

    ---

I found a tangential passage from this substack article interesting:

The system’s operators do everything they can to avoid direct exposure to the public, protecting themselves behind layers of automation and minor functionaries. Towards the end of the lockdowns, as patience was wearing thin and tempers were fraying, it became common for chain restaurants that still insisted on masking or other nonsense to have signs at the front admonishing customers to please treat the staff respectfully, because they were not the ones who set the policy, simply the ones who must enforce it or lose their jobs. This is intended to set up a no-win situation: the people you interact with physically did not make the decisions that outrage you, and the people making those decisions are hundreds of miles away and therefore quite beyond the reach of your outrage. It seems perverse to unload on some poor seventeen-year-old hostess who’s insisting that you must wear a mask to go to the table, but the only alternative to being a jerk (aside from just walking out) is to swallow your indignation and meekly comply. This is a core strategy of managerialism: withdraw as much decision-making power as possible from the organizational periphery, and concentrate it in a location (or, increasingly these days, a dispersed work-from-home network) that never actually has to answer to the people affected by those decisions.
I remember being in an airport at the height of this, and on screens throughout the terminals they had the inexplicably hideous, negatively charismatic, beady-eyed goblin Alejandro Mayorkas on screens in a loop chastising travelers for "abusing" airline staff. "It won't be tolerated! You will be prosecuted, fined, face prison time, blah, blah, blah". It was one of the most Orwellian things I've ever experienced in my life.

    myorkis.jpg

But think about what was going on here. They didn't want to hire a pleasant looking actor to make these announcements. It had to be one of the goblins himself. He got off on it, I assure you. The wretched creature is glad to "enforce" from behind a screen, and even knowingly agitate you into hatred of his abominable visage. It's all part of the psychological operation. But he knows if he put himself in the position of his minions, he just might end up hanging from a lamp post. He can't help but see the people over whom he rules as his enemy. Men like this literally hate you for whatever freedoms you might have left, and will remain insatiable until they've squeezed out every last drop.

When you fight in a war, you don't put bullets in the heads of the elite responsible for the chaos. You put them in the 18 year old kids who happen to be right in front of you at the moment. It's horrible, but that's just how it works. It's not going to be masks next time, but whenever they roll out the next submission ritual, they're going to do the same thing again and put a "poor kid just doing her job" in front of you to get you to submit. Will you fall for it again? Maybe it will help realizing that they would happily throw the same "poor kid" into a meat-grinder to get what they want. Just be glad all you had to do was make her day a little shittier, and hate her job a little more. She'll be fine.

I used to date a Swedish woman (this was in 2011) who was certain that military spending was a complete waste of tax dollars. Russia, she said, would never invade Sweden. Why would anyone do that? It just wouldn't make any sense.

In 2014, Russia invaded Crimea. I asked if this changed her mind about the likelihood of Russia invading Sweden, or the necessity of defense spending. Nope, not at all. Neither did the outbreak of full scale war in 2022.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to love in Europe. Their cities are an absolute dream and they take their coffee seriously. But I just can't get over the lackadaisical attitude toward defense spending. I know WHY they have it, but this bizarre refusal to believe that assholes exist and regularly obtain positions of power just baffles me.

I should at least give a nod toward the French on this matter. For all their issues, they at least take defense seriously, and have a fairly hardnosed outlook on international affairs more generally. Remember when our spying on Merkel was leaked, and everyone was clutching their pearls? The French gave a collective shrug. They understand that everyone spies on their allies. It's refreshing.
