Allergy season is fun.
I have suddenly developed serious hives and I wonder if it may be creatine. I have looked at reputable medical sites and they say that it could be a side effect. I don't know and I was wondering if anyone has had any similar issues? I have stopped intake (none for 7 days) and the hives persist. How long before creatine is out of the system? I know correlation ≠ causation in most cases. It's the only thing I have added to my diet, but I had no problems for the first 60 days. Only thing that changed was manufacturer--switched from SixStar to ON.
I have been to a physician and am taking Prednisone and Allegra (it is bliss not itching and seeing half-dollar sized welts disappear). (Doctor also raised his eyes at my ingestion of creatine, but I will ignore that). But pred is a short term solution and it seems its effect only last about 10 to 12 hours. Any suggestions (other than taking creatine out of my diet--which I have done)? Anybody here with real medical knowledge know if pollen allergy can change from itchy eyes and runny nose to hives?
Okay, as the newbie, ready to take the punishment of my fellow forum members.

seasonal pollen allergies can cause uticaria (hives) and the tree pollen has been really high for the past several weeks. i'm not making a medical diagnosis of your condition, just pointing it out.
i'm surprised the doctor didn't explain that to you. actually, no i'm not. most doctors are idiots
Boy, you should have sat through the nutritional seminar I underwent with their NP. I started SS this Feb, told her that I was working out 1-1.5 hours each session 4-5 times a week (3 days lifting, 1 to 2 days of HITT, been less since the hives though--hard to sleep, just lifting, no HIIT training) and explained to her my diet--what I figured my required calories should be (thanks to Jordan and "To Be a Beast")--and she flipped out. Didn't like my protein intake, didn't like my fat intake, didn't like my increased calorie intake. I am not medically trained, but I was good at sciences in HS and College, worked in medical research, and work in IT, so I know about about process and logic. I can read and understand enough in the med. fields to understand the basics (though once Jordan starts going on about macros and ratios all the jargon has me a bit bamboozled). Her information was at least 20 years old and completely based on the government RDA's. Insane. Though she did admit she was not a nutritionist and even said she would send me to one if I wanted (BTW I hate the hoops you have to jump through in the insurance system). At least my doctor took my wrist and ankle measurements and realized that I do indeed have a larger frame and change my BMI recommends in his charts. (BTW I hate government BMI too.)
Are taking any NSAIDS? My son developed an allergy to ibuprofen and it presented as huge red welts all over his body, top of his head to the bottom of his feet. He cannot take aspirin, naproxen, ibuprofen, etc. only acetaminophen.
Pred is a steroid, ie nuclear hormone agonist, with pleiotropic effects and triggers changes in DNA expression so it "lasts" much longer than 12 hours. If you're done with the pred burst and still have hives, you need to go see an allergist.
The only side effect I've had from creatine was stomach upset if there wasn't food in my belly around the time I take it.
