    Doing Starting Strength.
    Male, 23y/o, 5'7", 65kg

Struggling with deadlifts. I feel it in my lower back after doing them. I only did one in the video because I'm paranoid about hurting my back.

    Deadlift @95kg - YouTube

Before the pull should my hamstrings feel really taut?

If the video is no good I'll upload another one.

    Thanks.

    1) Go up to the top of this section and read the stickies on filming form checks so you can provide a more useful angle. 2) From what we can see, this doesn't look horrible, but you don't set your back. See the last post (by me) in the first sticky where I link to RIP's 5 steps for the DL. You are skipping step 4. After doing your reading, post another video after your next DL day.

Give us a set of five work weight reps. A light weight single is not very useful.

Agree with Dave and Joe, give us more reps on the video so we can have more to look at.

    Deadlift: 5 reps @105kg - YouTube

This is my work set - I used an alternate grip. Felt my back after the first rep.

Still not doing step 4 - chest up HARD, set your back and generate some tension on the bar before you actually start the pull.

Ser your back HARD. Chest up tighter. As you begin the pull, the bar rolls forward first, don't do that. Keep it against you the whole time.

Thanks for replies. I think that when I lift my neck up, I feel that I'm bringing my chest up but that's obviously not the case. Going to focus on chest up with neutral neck. I'll post a new video next week.

You might think of step 4 as rotating your rib cage up through/between your shoulders, and show your nipples to the wall in front of you. Pick a spot on the floor 12-15 feet in front of you to look at during the pull, to try to help refrain from over-extending your neck.
