No smart person does side bends. More hurting back than helping muscles.

Every mom knows a story about some kid doing side bends that got stuck permanently in the bent over position.

    Don't be that person.

There's a senior age guy that sometimes does these where I train, I cringe when I see it. He holds a dumbbell in each hand of equal weight ( so it's in balance anyway? ) then he proceeds to flex laterally to one side and then immediately to the other side going as fast as he can rep after rep. Seeing this in action you would think that he had a rubber column instead of a spine. It's not my job and I'm not in the habit of advising people of anything unless they ask but why would anyone presume that such a thing be of any benefit at all? It REALLY does look dangerous, even with light weights.

I see no benefit to them at all. But if he's having fun, fine.

What about that old school lift, where the lifter would bend totally to one side while pressing a barbell up with one hand. How did they not herniate everything?

I don't know how commonly they were done. Some people can do things that are not smart and still not get hurt.

I was called the bent press. Saxon was a champ in the lift. It makes my back hurt just looking at the old photos of it.

I did side bends on and off after I had ditched squats and deadlifts in my mid 40's. I can assure you they did no good at all in stabilizing or strengthening my core.

No that's a bent press and its nothing like a side bend , more like a good morning. The windmill starts from the top position(you press something and then you do the windmill).
Side bends are lame, one arm suitcase deadlifts are better in every way.
