    Default Possible acetabular labral tear?

Yeah I think I've fucked up bad.

So about 2-3 weeks ago, I did my first 2 low bar squat sessions in about 2ish years due to injuries from rugby and study. In those 2 sessions, I think I've messed up my hips. From emailing the guy who helped fix my back, he thinks the problem with my left hip is a weakness in my iliopsoas tendon which is snapping over the bony prominences of my hip. Every time I lie flat on my back, flex my thigh then extend my thigh, there's a loud popping sound. I didn't have this feeling at all before squatting low bar. The popping tends to go away when I do bodyweight high bar squats.

My right hip is the one that is badly screwed up. Every time I stand up straight, point my left foot straight forward, laterally rotate my right foot so that it is perpendicular to my left foot, lift my right thigh up then lower it, there's this awful crackling sound in my hip throughout the entire movement. I get no pain from the crackling. However, over the last few days, I've been feeling a slight tingling sensation in my right groin.

I had to take the last few weeks off of the gym due to college and went back to the gym yesterday. I switched to high bar squats as they felt a lot more comfortable. My back has recently been hurting again so high bar wouldn't aggravate it. I focused really hard on shoving my knees out. I felt a slight bit of pain in my right adductors on the eccentric portion of the lift. I also felt one or 2 cracks in my right hip just as I dropped down to hit depth. When I low bar squatted, I felt a number of cracks in my right hip. What frustrates me a lot about this is that I only had 2 squat sessions and have probably seriously injured myself. Is it possible to destroy your hips after 2 sessions of really light squatting (I was only doing 40kg then 45kg for 3x5).

From googling my symptoms, a labral tear seems the most likely cause of the crackling in my hip. Do my symptoms match anyone else on here who has had a labral tear? Should I try to get an MRI as soon as possible?
    Thanks

I didn't have one, but suspected I did.

If you see an ortho and you have a tear I think they will be able to diagnose it with a physical exam. The physical exam I had didn't indicate a torn labrum, so I had to try PT before the ortho would order an MRI. The MRI came out very clean so I don't know exactly what happened.

You may want to start with an appointment with an orthopedist.

your symptoms sound a lot like something I am experiencing at the moment although I don't yet have a diagnoses myself. At what point did you think you might have injured your labrum was there a specific incident that occured? For me I was squatting for about 10 months before I started experiencing pinching in the hip joint and now I have constant burning pain in my hip and also clicking which is especially noticeable while I'm in bed. I also have the symptoms you mention about flexing the thigh although mine sounds more of a clunk rather than a crackle.

Was you experiencing the same sort of symptoms as the OP and if yes how long did they sustain before clearing up?

No, not really. Popped something in my groin/lower abdomen (symptoms something like a "sports hernia") but there was no bruising. Reinjured about a month later, then again a month or so after that (yes, I was too aggressive, I know). After that cleared up I had this feeling of something "catching" while walking, eventually leading to groin pain. It took another few months for that to stop. I still get some irritation in the area from time to time but it's manageable. Not sure exactly what happened since MRI and x-ray didn't show anything and all the physical exams were inconclusive.

I think it might have been after my first squat session that things started to go downhill. With the popping sensation in my left hip as I extend my thigh from a flexed position, that happened pretty quickly. I think it may have been due to knee slide during the squat, about an inch before I reached parallel. From looking at the video that I took, my knee slide was minimal and comparing it to other form checks around this website, it seemed like I had no knee slide at all.
I have no burning pain in my hip but just some slight tingling, which I'm sure will get progressively worse unless I act now.

I'm no expert on this but i would be very surprised if you had managed to tear your labrum after your first squat session with a load of just 45kg. The human body is quite robust and can usually put up with a bit more abuse than that.
