I've been going at this alone for a while and making good progress. The few squat sessions have left me with soreness in the front of my hips. Last night, I only got one rep of the first work set (260 lbs.) when the pain was unbearable so I stopped and moved on.

I went ahead and did the bench, then started dead lift. I did my first warmup lift (135 lbs.) and again had that excruciating pain in the front of my hip. This is new, and I assume related to the pain from the squat. (BTW, I was going for work set of 305 lbs.)

The few people I've talked to at the gym try to move me to high bar squats and ask why I'm leaning my body forward. I'm at the point that I need to find someone to work with for a bit that gets the style/form of the SS program.

So ... long winded ... but I need some help in the KC area to get form down and recover from this hip pain so I can continue my progress.

You might want to start with a video form check. If you read the sticky at the top of the thread and video accordingly, you can get some pretty good feedback.

What gym do you go to? I'm not a coach, but I've been coached by a SS coach, have made my share of mistakes, and don't have any problems related to squat form, other than being old and not very strong. I think I'm old / experienced enough to know my limitations, as well. Will help if I can, but I work out at Stone and Barbell Club in Jo Co. Costs about $15 for a day pass, and I have plenty of time between sets.

I need to take video. Right now I need to heal up a bit before I try another with full weight. Just walking around has some painful points.

I'm working out at the YMCA in Blue Springs.

That looks like a nice gym for strength training! It's quite a ways from my house. My wife got a great deal on the Y membership and they offer child care. Kind of hard to beat that. I'd definitely be willing to come over as a guest if that's an open option.

The place suits me fine. It's all about getting stronger, and the thing I like best is that there are seldom more than 2 or 3 other people there when I go, so I can do my workout in peace. Biggest drawback is there's no AC, and it's been close to 90 F there most of this week, even in the AM. I choose to regard it as a free schvitz bath without the fat old men.

I work out M-T-Th-F from 7:30 to 9:30, and then go to work. Best would be if you could meet me there during my regular workout time. As I mentioned, there's a fair amount of time between sets.

If you have just been working out a few months and haven't been videoing yourself, there's a very good chance that you are making some fundamental form errors that can be corrected fairly easily, but no guarantees.

My philosophy regarding injury / soreness is that I keep working it if working doesn't make it worse. Second choice is to keep working the problem area as much as I can without making it worse, basically letting pain be the guide. If I'd waited til my shoulder injury (from a fall) from 2 years ago felt all better, I'd still be waiting. It's still a bit sore and weak, but a whole lot stronger and more functional than if I'd let it alone all this time.

PM me if you want to get together. I've seen a couple of coaches at my gym, one of whom looks like a pretty good coach, but I've only ever seen her coaching Olympic lifts. A couple of lifters are familiar with SS form - at least enough to comment / compliment me on my execution.

Sorry for no reply yet. I may still take you up on visiting your gym. I did post a new thread with a video at Squat Form Check For Hip Pain
