I recently had surgery (7 days ago) for an extreme lumbar disc herniation (L3-L4). Basically, everything that was previously inside the disc was now outside the disc and causing a near complete compression of the nerve-roots. I was unable to stand, walk, move, or even think hard without unbearable pain for a month prior to finally getting surgery.

I did not make this decision lightly or without a lot of consideration. I have been a strong advocate and follower of the Starting Strength methodology for several years and understood (from a layman’s perspective ) the research and anecdotal evidence that disc herniations (those that are even symptomatic) recover better and faster through use and proper training than surgery. Unfortunately, that just was not going to happen in my case.

With that out of the way, my surgery has been extremely successful, in that I can now stand, sit, walk and function without urinating myself. I will most certainly be prescribed PT after my follow-up with my surgeon in a couple weeks. Given that I used short-term disability leave from work, I will need to comply with the PT regardless of my feelings of how ineffective and wasteful it is as generally employed. Which brings me to my question, is anyone aware of any PT practitioners in The Woodlands, TX (Houston area) that would be more in line with Starting Strength, and very importantly, take insurance? At least this way it will not be a complete waste of my time and money.

Thank you for taking the time to read my long-winded post and I appreciate any and all feedback you may have.

    Regards,
    Clint Modesitt (Spring, TX)
