Keeping strength while traveling/touring
I recently started your Starting Strength program. I mean recently; today is day two. I began the program this week under the belief I'd have a good two month window where I wouldn't have to miss a gym workout. I am a touring musician and I am often called away at the last minute, and sure enough, I found out today that my band, The Killdares, is going to be going a weeklong tour of Ohio and New York. Needless to say, I will not be able to workout at a gym during the duration of that week. I'll get five total workouts in before leaving.
I do, however, have access to 25 and 40 pound dumbbells that make the journey with us in the van. Would there be any benefit to train during that week (dumbbell squats, lunges, overhead dumbbell press, etc.)? Are there certain auxiliary dumbbell exercises that would be more beneficial than others? Or would it be better to leave that week for rest? Should I continue to drink milk while away?
I understand there are no substitutions here; and I'm not asking for that. For the week I'm away the Starting Strength program is on hold. I just want to do my best to keep as much strength as possible while I'm away so I can hit the gym hard when I return.
My band has played Wichita Falls many, many times. We typically headline at the Iron Horse Pub when we're there, but we also played the before and after party for 2007's Hotter 'n' Hell bike race. When our touring season is done, I plan on contacting you and making the trip out to Wichita Falls for some direct instruction.
Thanks in advance and cheers,
Matt Willis

I have seen the dates for your band at IHP. Been meaning to catch the show, but time has been the problem for the past few years. In fact, we are going down there tonight after we train. Danny and John are members here. I'd be glad for you to stop by next time you're in town.
The best advice I can give you is to look at Eva T's blog. She posts workouts every day that can be done on the road. http://skievat.blogspot.com/
