Meralgia paresthetica, lateral femoral, cutaneous neuropathy, 79 year old male.

Got into SS about three months ago, did a few workouts and developed the problem listed above. Did do a few workouts and right upper thigh (quad) acted up and worried I might exacerbate the thing. Waited for it to just go away on its own, it didn't. Went to an orthopedist, not bone, ligament, etc. Finally yesterday to a neurologist, receiving this diagnosis. He prescribed Lidoderm lidocaine patches and Ibuprofen as needed and a visit to a PT to learn appropriate stretches. Asked him if squats would be okay, he said "no way".

I would really like to get going with SS. It does NOT hurt when I squat. Please, what is your opinion? Thanks.

Here is the description of this condition: Meralgia paresthetica is the term that describes a painful mononeuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). It is an entrapment neuropathy (pinched nerve) that develops as the nerve passes through the inguinal ligament. It may be due to direct trauma, stretch injury, or loss of blood flow to the nerve. The clinical history and examination is usually enough to make the diagnosis. The LFCN is a purely sensory nerve and is responsible for sensation of the anterolateral thigh. The LFCN has no motor component.

I assume you have not had this area massaged, but this might help with the entrapment at the inguinal ligament, if this is palpable to your therapist. If squats don't hurt, do them. Your doctor just told you not to squat because you're older, and that is the reflex reaction of the Doctor.
