Really, it's kind of lazy to buy new (though I'm guilty of this).
I think the Crossfit trend has pretty much killed the used market in most places near large cities. Airdynes, for instance, used to be practically free. Good luck finding a good one nowdays. Same for rowing machines. . . .

There are no cheap plates available anywhere near me.

I don't see many power racks on the market either.

Nor do I see decent barbells. Perhaps it is different where you live.

I'm going to list a PPR200x on Craigslist tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. I put an old bench / stand/ leg developer thingy that I haven't used for a while on Craigslist today. I don't expect it to appeal to xfitters. But it's a bargain.

How many of us have home gyms, but still pay for gym membership?

Yeah, it's hard to find quality used equipment around here. Had to drive an hour to pick up my lightly used rower the day after it was posted.

I've never seen a quality used bar or rack on craigslist in this area.

Right after I posted this, I saw an ad for a guy selling a smith machine and 400#s of plates for 150. I'm going to see what the plates are like and if he'll sell them alone.

I noticed the same thing. I live in an urban area, and to get descent used plates I ended up paying $1/pound. Maybe I didn't shop long enough to find that good deal? Anything cheaper and they were those crappy non-American made ones that could be off by several pounds either way. But in the scheme of things, $1/lb still isn't too bad for a bunch of iron that doesn't rattle all over the bar.

You also need to know how wide the opening to your basement is. Rogue makes a short version of the R3, but it's welded. You'd have to be able to get a 30"x90" rectangle into your basement. . . .
Depending on your height, 8 foot ceilings also dictate how you load your bar to press, which can affect which size plates you buy more/less of.

RE: complaining about the used market- I'm willing to bet real money y'all aren't using a refined search and/or looking multiple times a day.

Crossfit has only INCREASED the used equipment market, those bastards are getting SLAP tears every day.

I check every major surrounding city of craigslist several times a day. There's nothing within hours of me other than walmart golds gym 1" plates and bars. Airdynes are out there, but they want $300+ for a well used AD4.

Just today I saw C2 rowers with broken screens for $500.

How thick would I need the plywood to be? And would the thing about dropping a DL apply if I get the rubber plates?

RE: used equipment, I'm not actually opposed to it, I just don't really know what I'm looking at and what condition it's truly in or whether it's been misused. I suppose things like plates, bench and weight tree really wouldn't matter too much.
