Derek Poundstone knows how to properly use a smith machine. Watch this video:

I agree that this is a better use of the equipment, but you call these "proper" reps?

I counted 4 pull-ups. The rest were partial. I think we can cut him some slack since he can deadlift 800 lbs for 10 reps.

Rip, I did visit many gyms. The problem is that even the most expensive ones have endless lines of uber-sophisticated treadmills/isolation machines but no power racks what so ever. And sadly, not one coach I met understands the importance of squats. Everyone of them presents a five day split workout plan that has one day reserved for biceps/triceps and (thankfully) one day reserved for "legs workout".
Anyway, take away from this discussion is that the scientific data to conclusively prove the ergonomic deficiencies of a Smith machine doesn't exist (yet).
It's the start of a new financial year and I will start persuading the management again!

Not that this is scientific, but I actually hurt my shoulder years ago on a smith machine while benching. Since it is set in a track, the bottom part of the lift must have put my shoulder in a ackward position. I had nagging shoulder pain for years after that. And since I started lifting for real (2 years now), it is getting a little worse. I'm kind of pissed I used that thing.
Imagine the horror when I see people do upright rows on a Smith machine
