    Default Does the SS Techniques apply for high reps?

    • starting strength seminar december 2024
    • starting strength seminar february 2025
    • starting strength seminar april 2025
    Hi Mark,

    Does the Techniques for Squat / Deadlift / Press / Bench Press etc. specified in the book Starting Strength and it's Videos also apply for high repetitions like 8 to 12 per set (with less weights)?

    Or are these Techniques only applicable for SS programs with 5 repitions per set?

    Let me see if I understand your question: Do proper mechanics for moving the bar apply if you're doing 6 or more reps?

    I apologize if I am asking a silly question.

    Yes you understood my question correctly.

    I also wish to know if the same Breathing technique/ pattern demonstrated in SS Videos while doing squat/ press etc. (taking a big breath, holding the breath and squatting down) apply for higher Repetitions like 8 to 12 or more.

    Can their be a change in the Speed or Tempo while performing squat/press etc. For example doing the exercise at a slow pace?

    These questions make sense to ask only in the absence of an understanding of the basic material in the book. Have you read the book and not understood the mechanics, or have you not read the book?

    Would it make sense if they didn't apply if you did more repetitions? Is it logic if you suddenly were Mandated to exhale on the way down on your 6th rep, leaving you out of breath going up for the 7th, fainting would be inevitable: and that's why the Magical Maximum Rep Range is 5?

    I once tried using the squat technique found in starting strength for a set of 8 and I contracted leprosy as a result.

    Reps 1 to 3 the bar is supposed to be higher. Then 3-5 you do it just like rip says. Then on 5-7 to maximize muscle building you take no breaths, and from 7-15 you are free to do whatever you like.

    Now seriously, why on earth would the technique change for higher reps? Have you been hanging out at a crap-fit gym and seen terrible technique for high-reps and wonder if they have some "secrets" coach rip does not know of?
