    7/15/2013 It's H.O.T.

The kids have evening activities scheduled this week, so I have to lift after they are done.

    Press: 190x5, 215x3, 240x1, 215x3, 190x5. Onward I go.

I'll deadlift tomorrow sometime, hopefully when it is a little cooler. But I much prefer the hot weather to the cold of winter.

I did these in my new Adipowers. They are indeed narrow, but acceptably so for my feet. I'll try squatting in them this weekend. I did feel a bit like Dorothy in her ruby slippers.

7/16/2013 It's still hot, but my deadlift is not.

I've been trying an experiment where I do sumo deadlifts after my conventional. The hope was to continue raising my conventional deadlift (which has succeeded) while at the same time raising the sumo. This has failed. Today was realization day:

Deadlift: Sumo: 135x5, 225x2, 315x1, 405x1, 455x1, 510x0. That should have gone up, since it is only 3 lbs heavier than my third attempt at the meet. Then, just to get some conventional work in: 425x1, 385x2, 340x2.

    Chins:
    10,7,4,5,1, 27 total.

    Music: Van Halen.

Conclusion: I don't have to do extra sumo work. The only noticeable benefit has been that my calves don't cramp on the sumo anymore. I may just have to switch deadlift styles, but I don't want to do such a momentous thing precipitously. Like Winnie the Pooh, I'll think think think. . .

I weighed in at 249 today. What the hell? I'm wasting away. I've been around 252 since April, but am finding it hard to eat enough, apparently. I wouldn't mind losing a few pounds, but I don't want my total to slip. I'd rather stay where I am, and just add muscle. I wouldn't even mind getting heavier, if it meant I could pull 600.

    Data point entered.

7/19/2013 So, when does the cold front come through?

Bench: 315x5, 355x3, 395x1, 355x3, 315x5. Next cycle, the 1rm will be 400. That will be something of a milestone. I've done 407 in competition, but the training max has always been in the 300s.

Squats later, or tomorrow morning. It's still hot.

Music: The Band Perry, Black Sabbath.

I'm going to the Renaissance Faire tomorrow with my dad, brother, children, and cousins. It should be fun--think I might buy a sword. But I need to squat tonight, since I'll be driving in my usual squatting time.

Squat: 395x5, 445x3, 495x1. That's a training 1rm, and it's also a milestone, since it is 5 big plates per side. In fact, it uses every non-bumper 45 that I own. That's cool.

    Here's the video:

Music: Black Sabbath, AC/DC. I think you can see me mouth "For those about to rock. . . Fire!" before I squat the 495.

Diet note: now that I have basic compliance going pretty well, I'm going to add in Jordan's twice per week carb binges. I did that today, and actually ate french fries. We'll see how it goes.

    Karl,

That is an awesome rep and a huge milestone! I watched the video 5 times now, your form is fantastic. Question about your bar, is there no center knurl, or is that black tape on the bar?
