9\24\2013 A deadlift video, or Why I Pull Sumo in Contests

That's 440, a new conventional max. You can see the difficulty I have getting into the proper pretzel shape. That, combined with short arms, equals a deadlift significantly lower than my squat.

Press: 175x5, 205x3, used the wrong side of my sheet, then 255x1, and 230x3 to make up for my mistake.

    Deadlift: 350x5, 395x3, 440x1 New 1rm conventional!

Good job, Karl. I have issues getting into the "approved position". From the time my feet are under the bar it is 5 to 8 seconds max before I have bent over, grabbed and ripped it. I can't get down there . .I can't breathe. Good on you for the pulls brother!

Yeah, yeah, except that with my squat at +500lbs, my deadlift should be 550 or so.

    9\27\2013 Bench Press

So, remember my embarassing deadlift video?

Bench: 320x5, 365x3, 405x2, 365x2. That's a 2rm, and works out to a theoretical max of 431 via Wendler's formula. Some of us are pullers, and some of us are pushers.

    Wow, very inspiring! Great bench!!

What's the theory behind the back-off set of 365x2?

The theory is that I was stalling in both presses. I didn't feel overtrained (I wasn't moving backward), and I was eating enough, so I decided to see if the problem was that the training stimulus was too small. Remember, as you progress from beginner to intermediate to advanced, your recovery ability adapts as well. To get more progress, some times you need more stimulus. That was my guess. So far, it's worked.

The reason for 365x2 is that 3 wouldn't go. I then decided that this, plus the double at 405, was enough.

Interesting... Thanks for indulging me! I am wondering if, in addition to not eating enough, I am not getting enough volume on intensity days. Some days I only do 3 reps at my work weight. I did recently move from 3x5 to 5x5 on volume days, so I'm going to see what that does, and if I still feel like I'm stalling I might add some additional reps (even at a lower weight) on intensity days. Thanks!!

9\28\2013 A Milestone: Double Body Weight

Also, the most weight I have ever lifted, ever.

    Squat:
    405x5, 460x3, 510x1.

    Video:

Music: Chet Atkins, Avenged Sevenfold, then Halestorm's cover of Daft Punk's Get Lucky, which I played about 4 times during the workout. You can hear it here:

Wow, Karl. That shows what hard work and showing up can do. Congrats - nicely done.
