Why not use an allograft?
I've got a 13 y/o daughter, that recently tore her ACL playing flag football. No MCL damage, but the surgeon (Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago) is recommending using a quad tendon, and one from the IT band to repair the ACL, and then also reinforce her MCL. The surgeon's told us that in his experience, reinforcing the MCL minimizes reinjury risk. My daughter had just recently reached an age where I would have started to train her, but now we've got this to address. I guess two questions:
1. Any pros or cons on the recommended tendon harvest?
2. My wife and I will require my daughter to strength train with us, but for a prior untrained 13 y/o girl - what's a reasonable expectation, post-surgery, to begin helping her do the program?
Thanks for any thoughts and experience you have to share.
Why not use an allograft?
The surgeon stated he’s found a higher reinjury rate with allografts for young, active patients versus their own tissue.
We consulted two, both recommended against the allograft for her, similar reasons.
Sorry to hear that. Good luck.
Thank you, Mark. Appreciate the thoughts. Merry Christmas!
Hi Jason, two different places. One was Lurie’s children’s hospital and the other and orthopedic practice about an hour west of Chicago. Unaffiliated.
